About this recipe

Serve up some spook-tacular deviled eggs with the perfect Halloween twist.

Soak partially cracked hard-boiled eggs in red-colored water to create the illusion of a veiny, bloodshot eye. To make the eggs even spookier, the filling turns green with a few drops of green food coloring. If you don’t want to use food coloring, pureed spinach or pesto would work as a natural alternative.

This recipe creates a classic deviled egg with mayonnaise and mustard. But if you’re looking to amp up your eggs, feel free to incorporate truffle oil, wasabi, pickles or relish.

“It’s endless the flavors you can put into a deviled egg,” Jessica Holmes said.

Spooky Deviled Eggs

Directions

Spooky Deviled Eggs

  1. Add eggs to a pot of cold water. Bring water to a boil.
  2. As soon as it boils, turn off heat, put on lid and allow eggs to sit for 6-8 minutes.
  3. Drain eggs and run under cold water, then crack shells all over with a spoon.
  4. Add red food coloring to pot with water and add eggs back in. Refrigerate overnight.

Tip TIP: Cracked shells help absorb color for a spooky effect.

  5. Remove eggs and peel shells. Cut eggs in half. Remove yolk with a spoon and add yolks to a bowl.
  6. Add mayonnaise, mustard, salt and pepper to egg yolks and mix with fork.
  7. Add green food coloring or a combination of yellow and blue food coloring to give it a green spooky look.

Tip TIP: Use pureed spinach or pesto as a natural alternative.

  8. Add yolk mixture to a piping bag and fill your eggs. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
