Anthony Bourdain biopic casts star of Oscar-nominated 2023 film in lead role

Dominic Sessa, who made his big-screen debut in the Oscar-nominated 2023 film “The Holdovers,” has reportedly signed on to portray Anthony Bourdain in an A24 biopic of the late chef’s life.

Veteran actor Antonio Banderas is also set to star, according to outlets including Variety and Entertainment Weekly.

The film, to be called simply “Tony,” is expected to focus on Bourdain as a young man, chronicling a summer he spent working at a seafood restaurant in Provincetown, Massachusetts, before attending culinary school. Further details of the film — nor what role Banderas will play — have yet to be announced.

Sessa, meanwhile, has been rumored for the role since shortly after the project was announced in 2024, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The reaction to Sessa’s casting was mostly met with approval on social media, though many expressed concerns that the project felt “too soon.” (Bourdain died in 2018 at the age of 61.)

“I’m not as anti-biopic as some, but I’m not sure I want a Bourdain one at this time. But I also love Dominic Sessa and think he could do a great job,” one Reddit user claimed in a comment that received dozens of upvotes.

Filming of “Tony” is expected to begin sometime in May, Variety reported. Matt Johnson, who won acclaim for his 2022 film “BlackBerry,” is directing.
