We’ve all heard the saying “easy as pie.” But as many of us know, pies are often one of the trickier pastries to bake.
In an effort to simplify the process, Nexstar’s KELO invited culinary instructor Janelle Whempner to share a few of her tricks for baking a show-stopping pie — including five ways to adorn the dessert with a beautifully decorative lattice crust.
“When you say ‘lattice pie,’ … you have a picture that comes to mind,” Whempner said. “Well, there’s a lot of different ways to lattice a pie.”

In the segment above, Whempner demonstrates an unwoven lattice, a fat lattice, a slat lattice, a random lattice and a multi-strand lattice.
Whempner warned, though, that thicker lattices, or lattices placed in a tighter weave, may need longer to bake.
