We all love a good cinnamon roll, but few of us are patient enough to mix, knead and proof our own dough. Luckily, pre-made pizza dough works in a pinch.
Chef Emily from the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute shared her recipe for Maple Crumb Cinnamon Rolls with Nexstar’s WIVB, and it’s the perfect recipe for folks who are tight on time but still determined to satisfy their sweet tooths.
And the maple crumb-cake topping? That’s just the icing on the cake (or, rather, the pizza dough).
Maple Crumb Cinnamon Rolls
Yield: Makes 8 cinnamon rolls. Time: 45–60 minutes
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1 Tablespoon flour
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 package pre-made pizza dough (or use your own recipe)
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 stick butter (4 Tablespoons), melted
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch by 11-inch baking dish or 9-inch round baking pan with unsalted butter or cooking spray. Place a piece of parchment paper on the bottom, to further prevent sticking.
- In a small bowl, stir together the cream cheese, flour, cinnamon, maple syrup, egg and vanilla.
- Lightly flour your work surface, then roll out the pizza dough into a 16×10-inch rectangle. Spread the maple-cream cheese mixture over the dough.
- Starting at the long end closest to you, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 8 rolls, about 2 inches each. Arrange each roll in the prepared baking dish. It’s OK if they’re touching.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and butter together until it forms small clumps. Sprinkle streusel over rolls evenly.
- Bake the rolls for 30 to 35 minutes until the dough is fully cooked.
