Coca-Cola bringing back long-gone flavor, complete with ‘retro’ branding

Coca-Cola is bringing back a discontinued flavor — complete with a retro look.

Beginning in mid-July, Kroger outlets (and Kroger-affiliated stores) will offer Retro Diet Cherry Coke for a limited time, a spokesperson for Coca-Cola said.

The spokesperson said additional details would be made available at a later date, but confirmed the flavor will come in “retro”-style packaging. Snackolator, an Instagram account credited with breaking the news, shared an image that appears to show the cans and 12-packs with red and burgundy graphics on a white background, along with horizontal burgundy stripes.

A representative for Kroger was not available to provide comment on the upcoming launch.

Diet Cherry Coke was first introduced in 1986, shortly after the introduction of Cherry Coke in 1985. The flavors were immediate successes, according to Coca-Cola, and inspired the company to formulate new “fountain style” versions of both with “significantly more cherry taste” by 1991.

The Coca-Cola Company toyed with the flavor’s branding over the years — and replaced it with Diet Coke Feisty Cherry in 2018 — but discontinued its “diet” cherry cola in 2020, Beverage Daily reported at the time.

Among other flavors, Coca-Cola’s current beverage lineup includes two cherry-flavored beverages: Coca-Cola Cherry and Coca-Cola Cherry Zero Sugar. There are also two varieties of Diet Coke in the portfolio: Diet Coke and Caffeine Free Diet Coke.
