This 2-ingredient ‘Japanese cheesecake’ is the latest viral TikTok recipe

The Internet is going crazy over a two-ingredient dessert that purportedly tastes like cheesecake — and it’s high-protein.

TikTok users are combining plain Greek yogurt with cookies, letting it sit overnight and claiming it tastes like cheesecake. As dessert trends such as Dubai chocolate are fading away and high-protein diets are all the rage, this new food trend fits perfectly in the current culinary landscape, satiating sweet tooths while packing a punch of protein. This two-ingredient Japanese cheesecake trend (not to be confused with Japanese souffle cheesecakes, a fluffy, jiggly dessert with a chiffon-cake texture) likely began on Japanese social media.

In a TikTok posted Dec. 10, user @hanatakeu said, “There’s a new trend on X, so let’s try it out. Every Japanese person is doing this, and it’s to make yogurt cheesecake.” She explains the simple process, which entails adding coconut sable cookies (a type of buttery biscuit) to Greek yogurt and letting it sit in the refrigerator for at least six hours.

“Is it really going to be like cheesecake?” she said. After sampling, she remarked, “That’s really good … It’s like a lighter cheesecake, a little bit sour. I’m happy about this.”

On Jan. 6, @worldofxtra dubiously followed this recipe, showing elation and surprise upon trying the finished product. “I love that it’s not crazy sweet because it only relies on the sweetness of the coconut crackers and the yogurt itself is plain Greek yogurt,” he said. “If you don’t like coconut, it also does not taste like coconut at all. It just tastes like cake.”

Shortly after, both @gentianasaphiira’s take on the trend using Biscoff cookies and @18hens’ strawberry Oreo version and banana pudding version (with bananas, vanilla extract and Graham crackers) amassed 5.5M views each. “Viral food trends for the most part are overrated, but I’m being so honest when I tell you that this is the best, most creative food hack I’ve ever tried,” @18hens said.

As the Japanese cheesecake trend continues to grow, users are sharing their unique spins, including a tiramisu-flavored version. Tiramisu has become a popular dessert on TikTok, with users filling entire drawers with the Italian dessert. @eimearweeks combined Greek yogurt, Biscoff cookies, espresso and cocoa powder to make her tiramisu Japanese cheesecake.

Some users are opting for a higher-calorie version of the Japanese cheesecake trend by using Philadelphia No Bake Cheesecake instead of plain Greek yogurt. In a video posted Jan. 19, @keketherealmsjones followed the same Japanese cheesecake process with no bake cheesecake, Biscoff cookies and strawberry pie filling. The official Philly Cream Cheese TikTok account cheekily commented “if ur doing it with yogurt ur doing it wrong.” Other users such as @glambby_ and @imeatingshhhhh also opted to make this more decadent version of the trend.
