Pickles are in, and now so is pickle beer
Dive bars are famous for creating all sorts of concoctions. A Snakebite is equal parts lager and apple cider. A Black and Tan is equal parts lager and dark stout. And, for those in the Midwest, the Spear in a Beer is a pickle spear jammed into a glass of light beer. Starting May 4, you can get a taste of the tangy concoction that’s been steadily growing in popularity without hitting a bar stool, as cult-favorite brands Pabst Blue Ribbon and Grillo’s have announced a limited-edition pickle beer.
The idea is an easy-drinking beer that combines the maltiness of PBR with the dill-forward vinegar punch of a Grillo’s spear. It clocks in at 4.7% ABV, so it’s light enough for hot summer days or a nice grill session. “Somewhere along the line, someone put a pickle in a beer and never looked back,” said Rachel Keeton, Pabst Sr. Brand Director. “We’re taking that ritual and making it official with Grillo’s. It’s exactly as good as it sounds.”

PBR x Grillo’s Pickle Beer will be available at retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Albertsons, Safeway, Publix, Food Lion, Total Wine & More, GoPuff, KwikTrip and other retailers, starting on May 4, while supplies last.
Pabst is pretty smart to jump on the pickle trend, as Grillo’s has been everywhere thanks to a TikTok-viral recipe that combines Grillo’s pickles, Greek yogurt, whipped cream cheese, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese and ranch seasoning. Pickles have also made their way into everything from ice cream to lip gloss.
So pickle beer? Why not.
