National Taco Day is bringing a bevy of food deals your way on Tuesday. Whether you like them crunchy and corn-based or soft-shelled and pliable, tacos are a versatile, filling and flavor-packed option.
While tacos have pre-Hispanic roots, with indigenous Mesoamericans using corn tortillas to scoop up fish and beans, the word “taco” likely comes from the 18th century, explained Jeffrey M. Pilcher, a professor of history at the University of Minnesota, to the Smithsonian Magazine. At the time, the word “taco” referred to pieces of paper miners would wrap around gunpowder, he explained. In a similar way, miners’ lunches featured tortillas wrapped around a filling, and the term “taco” was then used to describe food as well.
Beginning in 2009, fast-food chains such as Taco Bell and Del Taco used Oct. 4 as National Taco Day as a marketing tool. But in 2024, Taco Bell moved National Taco Day permanently to the first Tuesday in October to fall on Taco Tuesday.
