Chipotle will give away free burritos for World Cup’s last hydration break

How to get a free burrito from Chipotle during the World Cup’s last hydration break

Raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten a water cup from Chipotle only to end up “accidentally” filling it up with lemonade. We get it; they’re practically right next to each other. Why go through all the hassle of finding the lever on the side of the Minute Maid dispenser when you could just not? And it’s not our fault the agua fresca and hibiscus lemonade fountains are so close. It’s almost like they want us to quench our thirst with anything other than water.

Plot twist: they know. Yep, that’s right, our not-so-secret cover has officially been blown.

The good news is Chipotle is fully leaning into the joke by giving soccer fans their own “water” break during this year’s World Cup final game—and $1M in free food. During the title-deciding matchup between Spain and Argentina this Sunday, July 19, Chipotle fans will have a chance to win one of 100,000 codes for a free entree.

Participation is simple. When the two teams pause for the second hydration break of the game, Chipotle will share a video from its official Instagram page, challenging fans watching from home to follow a lemonade-filled water cup as three identical cups shuffle across the screen. At the end of the video, the lemonade-filled cup will reveal a text-to-win code, and the first 100,000 fans to text 888-222 will win a free entree. It looks like filling our water cups with lemonade actually paid off after all.

This new campaign comes just a month after Chipotle announced its Matchday BOGO deal, which turned out to be the biggest promotional day in the company’s history. Fans were tasked with wearing a soccer jersey to restaurants to claim a BOGO entree, and let’s just say some people took creative liberties with the challenge. In addition to sporting their favorite team’s swag, some fans took matters into their own hands and hilariously DIY’d their jerseys, like this one, written in Sharpie.

It goes to show that Chipotle fans are just as diehard about burritos as they are about their favorite team winning the World Cup. Fortunately, Chipotle hasn’t caught on to people stashing entire Tobasco sauce bottles into their bags (yet), but if they do, maybe we’ll all get free tacos!
