Spam musubi is a beloved Hawaiian snack made from a slice of grilled Spam layered on top of a block of rice and wrapped together with a strip of nori. Spam became popular in Hawaii after its introduction during World War II to feed U.S. soldiers.
Low in cost to produce, spam musubi was a popular lunchbox item of Hawaiian plantation workers and is thought to have been invented by Japanese American Barbara Funamura.
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue sells more than 6,200,000 Spam musubi annually throughout all its locations, according to its website. The chain, which now has locations in 17 states as well as Japan, was founded in 1976 by Eddie Flores, Jr. and Johnson Kam. It specializes in plate lunch, also known as “the state food of Hawaii,” which features rice, macaroni salad, fish, chicken and other protein of choice.
If you’re in California or Arizona, Ono Hawaiian BBQ is offering 50% off Spam musubis with the coupon code SPAM808 on online or in-app orders.
