If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate on Sunday, look no further than National Margarita Day.
The classic bar drink was likely invented between the late 1930s and early 1940s along the Mexico-U.S. border. Some say that Carlos “Danny” Herrera in Tijuana was its inventor, while others insist Francisco “Pancho” Morales created the drink in Juarez. Still others maintain that Don Carlos Orozco created the classic cocktail in Ensenada.
Wherever it came from, margaritas can now be found at bars and cantinas far and wide. Sour and refreshing (and sometimes spicy), margaritas are generally made with two parts tequila, one part triple sec and one part lime juice, and finished with a salt rim. Modern takes often incorporate various fruit or blend the drink with ice for a smoothie-like consistency.
Mike’s Hot Honey is coming to coffee and cocktails
So how did Feb. 22 become National Margarita Day? Todd McCalla, a commercial real estate agent, declared it to be so, according to the official National Margarita Day website.
Why? He wanted to “to spread his love for margaritas around the world,” according to the site.
This year, a variety of restaurant chains are offering deals on Sunday in celebration of the cocktail. Cheers!
