Every October, candy and snack brands flood the grocery aisles with spooky packaging (see Costco’s Monster Mash Chocolate Frankenstein Head), pumpkin spice flavors and ghost-shaped treats. It’s a predictable marketing strategy, and honestly, something to look forward to every season. But Pringles is taking things to a different, slightly morbid level this year.
If you’ve ever joked that you love Pringles so much you want to be buried with them, the brand is officially calling your bluff. This Halloween, the company is daring people to make the ultimate commitment to their favorite potato crisp by giving away a 200-year supply of chips, along with a unique final resting place — a can-shaped urn. (Yes, really.)
Is the Pringles urn real? The history behind the Halloween contest
While a custom snack urn may sound like an unhinged internet joke cooked up by a quirky marketing team, this contest has surprisingly genuine roots. The campaign (which the company has aptly named “Once You Drop”) is a nod to the real-life inventor of the Pringles can, Fredric John Baur Jr. In 2008, a portion of his ashes was famously buried in one of the brand’s classic cardboard tubes.
Now, Pringles wants to give one lucky fan the chance to follow in Baur’s footsteps. They even teamed up with an actual funeral director (known online as @DanTheFuneralMan) to cheekily challenge fans to prove their loyalty.
How to enter to win a Pringles urn and an eternal supply of chips
To enter the sweepstakes, Pringles is asking die-hard fans to sign a digital “will and taste-ament.” By signing on the dotted line, you’re hypothetically pledging to spend eternity resting inside a Pringles can. (Could be worse, right?)
The grand prize winner will receive a custom, precious-metal Pringles urn. It comes personally engraved and features a removable lid. In addition to the urn, the winner also gets an “afterlifetime” supply of Pringles, which the company has generously calculated as 200 years’ worth of crisps. You obviously won’t live for two centuries, so the brand explicitly states that you can pass the remaining chips down to your loved ones after you kick the bucket. Leaving behind a generational wealth of potato chips is certainly one way to secure your legacy.
If you’re ready to sign your snacking life away, you can enter the sweepstakes right now by visiting OnceYouDrop.com. The contest is open until 11:59 p.m. ET on Oct. 22. The winner will be randomly selected and notified around Oct. 31.
