Pizza Hut’s ‘BOOK IT!’ summer reading program is back

Get your kids reading for free pizza this summer with Pizza Hut’s BOOK IT program

For readers of a certain age, the words “personal pan pizza” truly mean something. If you’re Gen X or a Millennial, you were likely encouraged to spend your childhood summers with a book in hand so you could earn a special treat that was all your own — a Personal Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut. Now, the program is making a comeback with BOOK IT’s Summer of Stories, and your kids will hopefully set down the iPads and video games to participate and start earning those free pizzas.

“Get ready to turn reading time into pizza time! This summer, keep your kids’ reading, learning, and loving books… all while earning FREE pizza,” reads a post from the BOOK IT! Instagram page announcing the Summer of Stories. You can register for the program starting May 1 and the program itself runs June 1-August 31. All you have to do to help your kids (pre-K through 6th grade) earn a free Personal Pan Pizza is:

  1. Download the BOOK IT! app
  2. Complete the enrollment form
  3. Create profiles for each child and set reading goals
  4. Track reading progress
  5. Meet the reading goal to earn the free pizza

That’s it! It may not hold the nostalgic charm of filling out an actual piece of paper to bring to the Pizza Hut counter like we did in the ’80s and ’90s, but it’s still a pretty great way to encourage your kids to do some reading this summer. Actually, it would be so cool if Pizza Hut could expand the age to participate by a few decades, because judging by the Instagram comments, there are tons of people well past 6th grade who would love to read in exchange for pizza. “Millennials are begging you to include adults please!” says one commenter. “Make one for adults too!” says another nostalgic pizza fan. “Where is the @bookitprogram for parents?! Please bring it back,” begs one mom. “If we still have our purple pins, can we do an adult version??” another mom asks.

Once your child has met their reading goal, the app will generate a certificate to present at a Pizza Hut location for the free Personal Pan Pizza. Kids can earn a free pizza each month throughout the duration of the program, so make sure they’re meeting those goals all summer long. In order to redeem the certificate, the child who earned it must be there in person. Happy reading!
