  1. Combine the grated onion, breadcrumbs and milk in a large bowl and let stand for about 5 minutes until the liquid is absorbed.
  2. Add the Italian sausage and chopped bacon and gently mix until combined.

  3. Divide the mixture into 6 portions and form into 1-inch-thick patties.
  4. Preheat a grill to medium-high heat.
  5. Oil the grill grates with the vegetable oil.
  6. Grill the patties over direct heat with the lid closed for 5 to 6 minutes per side, until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

    Tip TIP: Use an instant-read thermometer for accurate doneness.

  7. During the final minute of cooking, place a slice of provolone cheese on each burger and allow it to melt.
  8. Serve on toasted buns with desired toppings such as romaine lettuce, tomato, red onion, dill pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.
